2012 Kentucky Derby prep race Lecomte Stakes

Fair Grounds

2012 Kentucky Derby prep race Lecomte Stakes will be run at the Fair Grounds in Louisiana on Saturday, January 21.  The Lecomte Stakes has garnered a 13 horse field three year olds each longing to win a Kentucky Derby prep race. There are a few horses in the race that just might get a 2012 Kentucky Derby ticket.

Weights vary from 116 to 122 pounds in the one mile and 70-yard dirt race.  Jerry Namy’s Shared Property is one of two stakes winners in the field.  He drew the outside post and is the 4 to 1 and is the morning-line favorite.  “He’s training really well now,” Amoss said last week after the colt worked six furlongs in 1:15 4/5.  “He still has not won going two turns and that’s one of the things we’re anxiously looking for at this time. The Lecomte should be a good starting point for us, but the screws may not be completely tight just yet on  his horse. I expect him to run very well, but we’re also thinking about the rest of the year.” 2012 Kentucky Derby Dreams?

The other stakes winner in the group is Exfactor who won at Churchill Downs last summer.  Then there is Ted’s Folly, who comes to the race with a six-race win streak. Larry Jones, who has won two of the last five Lecomte Stakes, trains Brereton Jones’ Mr. Bowling.  “He has been training very well since he got here,” said Larry Jones last week.  “We’re  very happy with him. Obviously, Mr. Bowling likes this track a lot, but we also want to think he’s just getting better. He seems to be maturing more and more every day.”  Larry Jones is no stranger to the Kentucky Derby.  In 2008, he was the trainer of Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell and also trained Eight Belles who was injured in the Kentucky Derby.

There are two coupled entries – Zayat Stables has Dan and Sheila is coupled with ZDager.  The other coupled entry is Adena Chance and Hero of Order, who are both owned and trained by Gennadi Dorochenko.
