Who will win the 2012 Kentucky Derby? Confused?

A handicapping method?

So you are worried because you and your friends disagree  on who will win the 2012 Kentucky Derby.  Let me tell you – if you think you disagree with your friends, you need to just take a look at the sports writers. We saw the chart below and had to laugh. Everyone has opinions and possible winners for the 138th Run for the Roses.

Many suggest consulting the “experts” to pick a winner but then you still have differences of opinions. One could actually try to handicap and look great when you win and like a fool when you don’t.

For years, Louisville locals felt Pat Day deserved the win and put their money on him. It payed off when Lil E. Tee won in 1992 but that is the only year Pat Day won. During Derby week, many people who know nothing about horse racing will bet while they are having fun.  We have seen odds change on horses when the only possible reason could be the name of the horse (a girls name, Aunt Betty or ?).  Others stand by the betting windows hoping to overhear something that will help. Racetrack touts used to abound at the tracks to give you their opinions on a horse.  Another favorite is the grey angle, that is, if it is a grey horse it will win.  You can try using the program as a dart board – just  close your eyes and move your pen towards the program and where the pen lands on the program,  that is your horse. Then there is that point that many of us have hit when we just put our $2.00 down on the longest shot on the board and hope.

So if it is any help, here is what “experts” are saying today. It is still 8 days to Derby Day.  Our Kentucky Derby Tours cannot wait!  Whatever you do, good luck and remember to have fun!

Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund could win at the 2012 Kentucky Derby

Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund

The Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund could be a big winner at the 2012 Kentucky Derby on May 5 in Louisville, Kentucky. The connections of 2012 Kentucky Derby contender Dullahan announced yesterday that they came up with an exciting way to “give back” to horse racing by way of the Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund. The partners in Iowa-based Donegal Racing and owners of one of the Kentucky Derby favorites, Dullahan, along with Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino, today announced what could be a major contribution aimed at supporting disabled jockeys.

Donegal along with Dullahan’s trainer, Dale Romans, and jockey, Kent Desormeaux, have pledged five percent of the colt’s Kentucky Derby winnings to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. Then to top it off, Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona, Iowa will match the Donegal contribution.

“Horse racing is a glorious sport with a rich history, and those of us who love it understand that jockeys are gifted athletes who take risks every time they take a mount,” said Jerry Crawford, general partner in Donegal Racing. “This is a great opportunity to give back and we thank Prairie Meadows for joining us in the effort.”

Donegal’s partners voted unanimously to make the contribution.

“You know it’s an important and worthwhile cause when 24 people from 10 states agree without dissension,” Crawford said. “We believe in the work PDJF does to help jockeys and their families who have devoted their lives to the sport.”

The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) is a 501(c)(3) public charity that provides financial assistance to former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries.

“We are very thankful to Donegal and Prairie Meadows for sharing the thrill of Dullahan’s Derby run with PDJF. This commitment serves as a wonderful example and provides much needed help to the men and women we serve,” stated Nancy LaSala, the PDJF’s executive director.

Founded in 2006, PDJF has disbursed more than $3 million to permanently disabled jockeys, most of whom have sustained paralysis or brain injuries. The fund represents a cooperative effort among race tracks, jockeys, horsemen, and enthusiasts. http://www.pdjf.org

“Prairie Meadows has always been a supporter of the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund – a program that brings much-needed financial assistance to a group of athletes who have given so much to the sport of horse racing,” noted Gary Palmer, president and CEO of Prairie Meadows. “In order for that organization to do its work in supporting injured riders and finding technologies and practices that help to improve the safety of both the human and equine athlete, they need funds. So, we are delighted that Donegal Racing is stepping up to donate five percent of any Kentucky Derby winnings this year to that fund.

“And for our part, Prairie Meadows is proud to offer to match Donegal’s contributions, dollar-for-dollar, to assist the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund in the great work that they do,” Palmer added.

Let’s take a look at the fillies in the 2012 Kentucky Oaks

Kentucky Oaks Lily

Let’s not forget the 2012 Kentucky Oaks

There are many great stakes races during Derby week at Churchill Downs but one of the best has got to be the Kentucky Oaks. The Kentucky Oaks is held on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby each year. The winner gets a large garland of lilies, affectionately called the “Lilies for the Fillies”.

Despite the increasing number of out-of-state visitors who come to the Derby week in Louisville every year, the “Oaks” (as local residents refer to it) has tried to remain a local day. Locals feel it is “their Derby”. Large crowds of locals attend the Oaks annually and the infield of the race track hosts numerous musical attractions, boardwalk games, and food and alcoholic beverage vendors. Bringing in one’s own alcohol is forbidden at Churchill Downs and many locals revel in finding ingenious ways to smuggle in their own libations, rather than pay the inflated prices inside Churchill Downs. Many Kentucky Derby Tours members have mentioned the numerous ways they show on TV that people sneak in liquor to both the Oaks and Derby. Surprisingly on Oaks Day, most every school and quite a few businesses in the Louisville area are closed on Oaks Day. None of the region’s schools declare that the holiday is explicitly because of the Oaks and most just say it is an “administrative holiday.”

The Oaks is limited to 14 starters by graded stakes earnings (we certainly have heard much about them this year). There will be 4 “also eligibles”, which means that if any of the Top fourteen horses in graded stakes earnings that are entered in the Oaks drop out – an “also eligible” horse can go in place of that horse.

The Oaks has always been a great race and here are this year’s contenders.

2012 Kentucky Derby Musical Chairs or graded stakes earnings

Churchill Downs

It is that time of year that always reminds me of a game I played as a kid called musical chairs. Kentucky Derby horses will change as owners, trainers and just plain luck plays a part in the horses that will run in the Derby. As one group of connections is despondent when their horse will not be in the Derby, another group of connections is euphoric.

This year will be a bit different. We get to play musical chairs for 2 extra days – until Friday, May 4th at 9 AM because we have 4 “also eligibles”. That means that if any of the Top twenty horses in graded stakes earnings that are entered in the Derby drop out – Presto, an “also eligible” horse can go in place of that horse.

Here are the horses by graded stakes earnings as of 6 AM on April 23

A New Yorker to bet $100,000 on 2012 Kentucky Derby and Isn’t He Clever has new trainer

New Yorker Who Watched Legendary Kelso Race Gets Chance to Place Life-Changing Bet

A longtime horse racing fan from New York has won a chance to place a life-changing $100,000 win bet in the 2012 Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 5.

Joel Einhorn of Flushing, N.Y. was randomly selected to place the grandiose free wager in conjunction with the $100,000 Kentucky Derby DreamBet online contest, which was offered by Churchill Downs, NBC Sports and CNBC for the third consecutive year.

“I saw (five-time Horse of the Year) Kelso run in an allowance race at Aqueduct in 1960 and have been hooked ever since,” Einhorn said. “I’ve been an owner, a spectator and a handicapper for over 50 years. This is the fruition of a lifetime dream.”

Einhorn, 68, hopes to follow in the footsteps of inaugural contest winner, Glen Fullerton of Houston, who won $900,000 when Super Saver won the 2010 Kentucky Derby at odds of 8-1. Last year, Dave “Rico” Flores of Chicago came close but fell short when Mucho Macho Man finished third behind Animal Kingdom.

In 2006, Kelso’s trainer Carl Hanford was a member of Kentucky Derby Tours. He came to Kentucky to watch his brother “Babe” Hanford place his handprints in the ‘Gallop to Glory’ exhibit for Kentucky Derby winning jockeys. “Babe” won the 1936 Kentucky Derby aboard Bold Venture. Isn’t He Clever trainer change

One of the horses “on the 2012 Kentucky Derby bubble” at number 21 or 22 (depending on whose list you read) is Isn’t He Clever. He has been transferred to trainer Steve Amussen, according to owner J. Kirk Robison, and a start in the Kentucky Derby is still under consideration.

Isn’t He Clever had been under the care of Henry Dominguez. A 3-year-old gelded son of Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones, Isn’t He Clever arrived at Asmussen’s barn at Churchill Downs on April 17.

“We moved him to Steve’s barn because there are more opportunities for him on the dirt being in Kentucky and out in the East than if we brought him back (to New Mexico),” Robison said via phone from El Paso.

Robison said the Kentucky Derby is still possible for the Isn’t He Clever, who has $191,333 in graded stakes earnings. The graded stakes earnings list will likely determine the participants in the 138th running of the Run for the Roses.

“We’re evaluating our options,” Robison said. “The Derby is still under consideration, but I’ve always said I would never enter the Derby if I didn’t think the horse would be competitive. The horse will go out for some exercise this week, but won’t have a work till next weekend. The decision will be based on Steve’s opinion.”

Bred in Kentucky by Monticule, Isn’t He Clever has a career record of 4-2-0 from eight starts and earnings of $395,293. He was purchased for $45,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

2012 Kentucky Derby/Oaks mounts for Garrett Gomez and a new book!

Jockey Garrett Gomez

The New Year started off well for two-time Eclipse Award winner Garrett Gomez. He was having a phenomenal meet at Santa Anita Park with six stakes victories in the first 10 days of the meet. Garrett ranked second in the nation in earnings, with $380,380 won in the first eight days of 2012. It was looking like his Kentucky Derby horse would be Out of Bounds.

Then on January 8th his mount, Silver Summation, flipped over on the walkway from the paddock to the track before the eighth race at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. On January 12th, Garrett had surgery on his left heel. Garrett Gomez’s agent, Tony Matos said, “He will have the surgery on Thursday and be out from four to six weeks.” During that time, Garrett’s Kentucky Derby mount, Out of Bounds was injured and would need until after the Derby to recover.

Six weeks turned into 8 weeks and after riding in one race, Garrett determined “there’s just too much pain” and he took off his remaining mount that day. But it really did not take him long to start riding and winning. He won his first race since his surgery on March 24 (less than three months after surgery).

This week it was announced that Garrett will ride Bob and Cathy Zollars Daddy Nose Best in the May 5th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Daddy Nose Best is already at Churchill Downs. Trainer Steve Asmussen watched him work Friday and said, “I thought it was a great work, he went over the track really well and I’m glad we were able to get the work in before the rain hit.”

On Friday, it was announced that Garrett will ride Summer Applause in the 2012 Kentucky Oaks on Friday, May 4th at Churchill Downs. Summer Applause had a record of 2-2-0 in four starts at the Fair Grounds meet. Summer Applause had been ridden by Robby Albarado in all four of those starts.

In talking about Garrett, trainer Dennis ‘Peaches’ Geier said, “When he’s healthy he’s one of the top-two riders in the country.”

“We’re starting to get excited,” Geier said. “She has a legitimate chance to win.” Geier said Summer Applause will have her final work prior to the Oaks next Friday.

Looks like Garrett will be looking for Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby tickets for his family and friends.

There is more exciting news in May for Garrett. His book, ‘The Garrett Gomez Story: A Jockey’s Journey Through Addiction & Salvation’ written with Rudy Alvarado of Caballo Press will be published. Both Rudy and Garrett will be in Louisville during Derby week and are going to sign copies of the book at the Kentucky Derby Museum on May 3. Kentucky Derby Tours is pleased to have Mr. Alvarado attending some of our events and we all look forward to seeing the new book!

Barns at Churchill Down filling with Kentucky Derby horses

Barns at Churchill Downs

It seems that Derby contenders are arriving more than two weeks ahead of the 2012 Kentucky Derby. Years ago, only a few horses arrived early or the horses only arrived early as their trainers were based at Churchill Downs.

Six Derby horses that have already arrived at Churchill Downs include:

Bob and Cathy Zollars’ Daddy Nose Best who continued his preparation for the Derby with a five-furlong breeze Monday morning in 1:00.20 for trainer Steve Asmussen. “I thought it was a great work,” Asmussen said. “He went over the track really well and I’m glad we were able to get the work in before the rain hit.” Asmussen noted that “if the weather lets us,” Daddy Nose Best will have two more workouts prior to Kentucky Derby 138 and they will take place at Churchill Downs on April 23 and April 30.

John Oxley’s Prospective will run in the Derby according to assistant trainer Norman Casse late Wednesday. “We wanted to see how he came out of the Blue Grass and he galloped great yesterday (Wednesday),” Casse said. “Ultimately, the decision was up to Mr. Oxley and he wanted to run.”

Zayat Stables LLC’s Bodemeister who won the Arkansas Derby arrived in Bob Bafferts barn on Monday.

Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC’s Sabercat arrived for trainer Steve Asmussen. Sabercat recorded the biggest victory of his career in the $1 million Delta Jackpot last November.

Donegal Racing’s Dullahan is at Churchill Downs in the barn of Louisville based Dale Romans. Dullahan won the d Blue Grass Stakes last Saturday at Keeneland.

Brereton C. Jones’ Mark Valeski who is currently #21 on the Kentucky Derby graded stakes earnings is in the barn of Larry Jones.

Sadly, Secret Circle (already at Churchills Downs) will miss up to four months with a sesamoid injury, co-owner Mike Pegram confirmed April 19.

Three more Derby contenders are already in Kentucky and include:

Kendall E Hansen & Sky Chai Racing’s Hansen is at Churchill’s Trackside Training Center in Louisville. Hansen’s trainer is Mike Maker.

Chadds Ford Stable’s Union Rags trained by Michael Matz is currently at Keeneland.

Team Valor International and Mark Ford’s Went the Day Well trained by Graham Motion is currently at Keeneland.

Another scheduled to fly to Kentucky is Reveron. This Florida-based colt owned by Stipa Racing and trained by 59-year-old Agustin Bezara, is booked to ship straight to Churchill Downs in Louisville on Sunday. He is hoping to have enough graded stakes earnings to enter the Derby.

Kentucky Derby Tours hopes to see some of the Derby contenders when we tour the backside at Churchill Downs.

Lexington Stakes could change 2012 Kentucky Derby starters

Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky

We are coming down to the wire for 2012 Kentucky Derby prep races. The $200,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday, April 21 could have implications on the graded stakes earnings of Derby contenders and change who actually gets to start in the 2012 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 5. The Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct is also on Saturday and offers graded stakes earnings but there are not any Derby contenders in the field of 7.

Like the Derby, the Lexington Stakes starting field limited to 20 horses with preference given based on earnings in graded stakes. The $120,000 first place money could elevate some into Derby consideration. There are 11 horses that past the entry box on Wednesday.

The Lexington Stakes starters that could benefit from the graded stakes earnings (grs) in the Lexington include Southwest Stakes winner Castaway ($162,000 in grs), Illinois Derby runner-up Morgan’s Gorilla ($100,000 in gse), Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth runner-up News Pending ($80,000 in gse) and Tampa Bay Derby runner-up Golden Ticket ($70,000 in gse).

The lineup for the Lexington Stakes in post-position order with their jockeys is: Morgan’s Guerrilla, Julien Leparoux; Summer Front, Ramon Dominguez; Johannesbourbon, Garrett Gomez; Skyring, Jon Court; Golden Ticket, Manny Cruz; Holiday Promise, Junior Alvarado; Castaway, Shaun Bridgmohan; Hammers Terror, Robby Albarado; All Squared Away, Julio Garcia; News Pending, Kent Desormeaux and Gold Megillah, John Velazquez.

The Lexington has a post-time Saturday of 5:15 PM (ET) and will be on HRTV and TVG.

The last Lexington Stakes winner to go on to win the Kentucky Derby was the Bob Baffert trained Charismatic in 1999.

There will be one more race after this weekend that could impact the top 20 entrants for the Derby. The Cliff’s Edge Derby Trial on April 28 (opening day) at Churchill Downs in Louisville could add graded stakes earnings to the winner. But keep in mind that the Derby Trial is only 7 days before the 2012 Kentucky Derby and there might not be enough graded stakes earnings depending on how many horses enter the race. Only a hand full of horses have won the Derby Trial and gone on to win the Kentucky Derby – Black Gold in 1924, Citation in 1948, Hill Gail in 1952, Dark Star in 1943, and Tim Tam in 1958. Most owners and trainers are now using the Derby Trial as a prep race for the Preakness Stakes as it allows 3 week between races.

Triple Crown winner Secretariat’s birthplace to be auctioned

Secretariat statue at the Kentucky Horse Park

The former Meadow Farm, in Caroline County, Virginia will go on the auction block on May 22, 2012. It was purchased by the State Fair of Virginia Inc. for $5.3 million in 2003. Now called the Meadow Event Park, the state fair has been held there since 2009. The site has been host to other events including the Strawberry Hill Races, and the Meadow Highland Games and Celtic Festival. When the park was developed to host the fair, Secretariat’s foaling shed was relocated and restored, making it an attraction at the Meadow Event Park. Secretariat or ‘Big Red’ as he was known to many a race fan was born on March 30, 1970 at Meadow Farm in Doswell, Virginia. There is a sign marking it as the birthplace of 1973 Kentucky Derby winner Secretariat.

Heavy debt has forced fair organizers to liquidate under federal bankruptcy law. The 331+ acre complex is to be auctioned May 22, 2012 as a 4 to 7 tracts or as an entirety (to be determined). The remainder of the personal property will be offered via an online only auction which will close on May 24, 2012.

The main house is described as “an exceptional Southern style mansion surrounded by stately old trees and pastoral settings. The grand ballroom is ideal for weddings, meetings or conferences while the second floor can accommodate separate breakout or pre-event functions. Featuring a marble entry and beautiful mahogany paneling throughout, the Union First Market Bank Hall has all of the modern amenities to make your next event an exceptional affair.”

Last spring, The Meadow Event Park began offering guided tours of “Big Red’s” famed birthplace in Doswell, Virginia. Highlights of the tour include involve a tram ride, some walking and an indoor presentation which features video clips. People saw the foaling shed where Secretariat was born; the yearling and training barns with the stalls where Secretariat and Riva Ridge (Meadow Stable’s first Kentucky Derby winner in 1972) stayed as young colts; the stallion barns; the fabled Cove, where the broodmares and foals grazed and a horse cemetery.

Secretariat was the Muhammad Ali of racehorses, a brash and charismatic champ who was the breakaway winner of the 1973 Triple Crown. In 21 career starts, the big chestnut colt finished first 16 times and earned a total of $1,316,808. He set a track record of 1:59 2/5 in the 1973 Kentucky Derby, won the Preakness Stakes, and won the third leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, by an astonishing 31 lengths. After his three-year-old season he was retired to stud at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. Secretariat died at the young age of 19; he was euthanized when a chronic foot disease called laminitis became too painful for him to bear. Penny Chenery, Secretariat’s owner came to lunch with our Kentucky Derby Tours group many times over the years.
