5th Annual Jockeys and Jeans Stallion Season January 29-31

PDJF logoThe fifth annual Jockeys and Jeans Stallion Season sale has attracted a host of new and popular stallions, led by Eclipse Award winning Champion Sprinter Runhappy. The season was donated by his famous Houston owner Jim “Mattress Mac” McIngvale, a major donor to the PDJF. It is expected to sell well because his yearlings have sold for up to $700,000 and according Bernie Sams, manager at Claiborne Farm where he stands for $25,000, his book is full and the farm is not accepting any more mares.

Other popular stallions include Tonalist, Point of Entry, World of Trouble, Mucho Macho Man, Alternation, Army Mule, Oxbow, Upstart, American Freedom, Tapiture, and Audios Charlie and First Dude, the two leading Florida stallions in 2019 by money won. The list of over 50 stallions include those standing in Kentucky, Florida, New York, California and Pennsylvania.

A preview of the seasons is available on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at Starquine.com. The sale starts Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 9:00 a.m. EST and end Friday Jan. 31 at 6:00 p.m. EST.

“Believe me, we understand that breeding farms are deluged with requests for season donations from a wide variety of charities and state breeding programs,” said Jockeys and Jeans President, Barry Pearl. “But ours is the only online sale we know of that the proceed goes solely to human beings, namely those 60 former jockeys who suffered catastrophic, career ending injuries and are supported by a $1,000 monthly stipend by the PDJF. For some it means paying the electric bill and making the rent.”

Founded in late 2014 by a group of former jockeys, Jockeys and Jeans has raised over $1.4 million for their severely injured brothers and sisters. In addition to their annual Stallion Season Sale, the group organizes a yearly fundraising event at a separate track. Some 15 Hall of Fame riders are on hand to honor six of their fallen brothers and sisters who also attend. The seventh annual Jockeys and Jeans is set for Churchill Downs late next spring. The five previous sales have earned over $250,000.

“I think for many the opportunity to buy seasons to solid stallions for a good price is no more important than the opportunity to directly help those who are no longer riding racehorses but wheelchairs,” said Pearl. “Every penny of every season purchased goes to the PDJF. They say on the racetrack ‘what goes around comes around,’ and I am convinced one day a season purchased to help racing’s fallen brothers and sisters is going to produce an absolute champion.”
