2012 Kentucky Derby Musical Chairs or graded stakes earnings

Churchill Downs

It is that time of year that always reminds me of a game I played as a kid called musical chairs. Kentucky Derby horses will change as owners, trainers and just plain luck plays a part in the horses that will run in the Derby. As one group of connections is despondent when their horse will not be in the Derby, another group of connections is euphoric.

This year will be a bit different. We get to play musical chairs for 2 extra days – until Friday, May 4th at 9 AM because we have 4 “also eligibles”. That means that if any of the Top twenty horses in graded stakes earnings that are entered in the Derby drop out – Presto, an “also eligible” horse can go in place of that horse.

Here are the horses by graded stakes earnings as of 6 AM on April 23
