Big weekend for races on 2015 Kentucky Derby watch

K Derby NBC logoThere are three races this weekend that will have an impact on the 2015 Kentucky Derby on May 2nd at Churchill Downs.

Starting on the East Coast, the 1 1/8 mile Wood Memorial usually guarantees the first and second place finishers a spot in the Kentucky Derby. The Wood Memorial is worth 100 qualifying points to the winner as part of the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” system, 40 points to second, 20 to third and 10 to fourth. Right now, the horse with the most points on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” is El Kabier with 75 points. Right now he is fifth in the Kentucky Derby standings with 75 points. The other colt on the radar of Derby points is Daredevil currently at #28 with 10 points.

The second choice on the morning line odds at 5-2, Frosted, finished second in the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park behind Upstart. The rest of the field includes Tiz Shea D, Toasting Master, Tencendur, and Lieutenant Colonel.

The Toyota Blue Grass Stakes is at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky on Saturday. The points for first, second, third and fourth are the same as the Wood Memorial so the top two horses here may qualify for the Kentucky Derby. The favorite is Carpe Diem who likes Keeneland and currently sits at #7 on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby point standings with 64 points. Classy Class and Ocho Ocho Ocho are the co-second choices on the morning line. Other horses in the race are: Gorgeous Bird, Pepper Roami, Unrivaled, Frammento, and Danzig Moon.

The $1 Million Dollar Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California has a clear cut favorite in undefeated Dortmund. Dortmund is at #6 in the Kentucky Derby point standings with 70 points and among the favorites for the 2015 Kentucky Derby. The points for first, second, third and fourth are the same as the Wood Memorial and the Toyota Blue Grass so the top two horses here may also qualify for the Kentucky Derby. Other horses in the race who everyone feels has a chance are Prospect Park and Bolo. One Lucky Dane, Cross the Line, and Bad Read Sanchez round out the field for the race.

With the relatively small fields for these major races, one wonders how the 2015 Kentucky Derby will line up.
